The UK website Guardian is reporting that European customs officers have been ordered to seize shipments of Playstation 3′s after LG won a preliminary injunction against Sony in an acrimonious patent battle between the two Asian electronics giants. The ruling by the civil court of justice in the Hague means that all new PS3s have to be confiscated as they are imported into the UK and the rest of Europe for at least 10 days.
Now the long and short of this is LG claims that Sony has breached its patents with respect to how the PS3 handles playback of Blu-ray media. If Sony loses this lawsuit and is found to be in fact breaching 1 or more LG patents Sony will likely be forced to compensate LG financially for every PS3 sold thus far. This lawsuit is just one of many law suits the two companies are already embroiled in, including one where Sony is trying to block the sale of some LG phones in the US.
Tho this is only a temporary injunction the Guardian is reporting that stockpiles of existing PS3′s would last two to three weeks if the ban was extended for any length of time. Perhaps Sony should ask their lawyers if this constant cat and mouse game of suing everyone is really worth the effort, it seems to be sue then be counter sued for a lot of their current battles. *cough*Geohot*cough*
